We are dedicated to keeping participants and staff safe by increasing awareness of concussions and helping properly manage people with suspected and diagnosed concussions. Contact us to view an accessible version of our Concussion Policy.
What is a concussion? |
A concussion is a brain injury that causes changes in how the brain functions, leading to symptoms that can be physical (ex. headache, dizziness), cognitive (ex. difficulty concentrating or remembering), emotional/behavioural (ex. depression, irritability) and/or related to sleep (drowsiness, difficulty falling asleep). For more information please visit the Ontario Concussion resource Rowans Law. |
What causes a concussion? |
A concussion may be caused by either a direct blow to the head, face or neck. It can also be caused by a blow to the body that transmits force to the head, causing the brain to move rapidly within the skull. Concussions can occur even if you don't lose consciousness. Concussions can be seen on x-rays. |
Who is susceptible? |
Anyone may get a concussion, and young people with growing, adolescent brains are most susceptible, and take longer to recover than adults. It is important to receive proper medical care when a concussion is suspected. Without identifying a concussion and managing it properly, it can lead to permanent brain damage and in rare cases death. |
