There are plenty of ways to get involved with 55+ Recreation. You can volunteer, sponsor an event/program or be a not-for-profit partner. It's all about giving, sharing information and becoming involved in the community.
55+ Recreation offers a variety of enjoyable and fulfilling volunteer opportunities. Make new friends and get involved in 55+ programs.
Program Convenors |
Coordinates, organizes and facilitates Drop-in Recreation Programs for the members of the 55+ Recreation Centre in cooperation with 55+ Recreation Services and the 55+ Recreation Advisory Committee. Usually once per week. Can be a shared position with a co-convenor. |
Kitchen Helpers |
Help Mingles Dining Room staff to operate food services. Includes: prepping food, washing dishes, serving customers, stocking supplies and cleaning. May also include cash handling, depending on time of day. |
Peer Ambassadors |
Greet and provide guidance to 55+ members in the lobby of the 55+ Centre. Help members learn about 55+ programs and services, program locations, provide tours and help members find community resources. |
Special Events |
Assist staff and Committee volunteers with set up/clean up and implementing special events throughout the year. |
55+ Recreation Advisory Committee |
The Whitby 55+ Recreation Advisory Committee supports all social and recreational programs, and advises the Town of Whitby on matters relating to the Town's 55+ recreation services. The Committee encourages all adults 55-years-old and up to participate in activities that lead to a healthy and active lifestyle, provides space for friendly interaction among members, and promotes involvement and goodwill among individuals with 55+ recreation services memberships. The Committee meets on the second Friday of each month at the 55+ Centre. Apply to get more information about becoming a 55+ Recreation Advisory Committee Member |
To apply to be a volunteer, visit Whitby 55+ Recreation Centre or Brooklin Community Centre & Library, and either fill out a form in person or fill out the online form.
2023 Mayor Senior Volunteer Award winner, Nelson Tellis with Mayor Roy
Each year the Mayor of Whitby recognizes the valuable contributions that seniors have made to our community, by presenting the Mayor's Senior Volunteer Award to an individual with outstanding commitment to community involvement through volunteering. The purpose of this program is to enhance the profile of older volunteers within our community.
From January to March each year, you are invited to nominate an individual for this award by completing the fillable nomination form located at whitby.ca/msva, making sure to provide as much detail as possible.
