Last night, with the support of Town Council, the Town of Whitby made the decision to opt-out of having private retail cannabis stores within its municipal boundaries.
More than 2,600 residents and people who work in Whitby provided feedback that helped Whitby Town Council make the decision. Specifically, 412 residents participated in a telephone survey and more than 2,200 online survey responses were received.

Last night, Whitby Town Council voted to adopt a 1.94 per cent increase as the Town’s impact on the total residential tax bill. This represents an increase of approximately $8.36 per month per household*. The Town’s portion of the overall tax bill is approximately 33 per cent.

Visitors to Town Hall will have noticed a number of changes currently underway - from the install of new flooring and walls to the temporary relocation of service desks. This construction is being completed as part of the multi-year Town Hall Redevelopment project, aimed at ensuring the facility meets the growing needs of the community.

The Town would like to advise residents of a new By-law (#7464-18) that now prohibits smoking on the property of all Town recreation centres, arenas and libraries. The By-law came into effect on Tuesday, January 1, 2019.
In addition to the properties noted above, smoking continues to be prohibited at all Town parks and special events. Smoking is also not permitted within 20 metres of Town Hall, the marina and other municipal administration buildings.
