"Building permits are just paperwork."
Not true. Building permits help ensure your project meets the Ontario Building Code, the Town's Zoning By-laws, and other applicable regulations. Getting a permit protects your investment by helping ensure your project is safe, compliant, and built to approved standards.
Permits are commonly required for projects like new homes, additions, finished basements, garages, structural changes, decks over 24 inches above grade, Additional Dwelling Units, and many other renovations. Staff review your plans before work begins, issue permits, and complete inspections at key stages of construction to help ensure the work is done safely and according to approved plans.
And like most municipalities, the Town of Whitby charges building permit fees for projects that require a permit. These fees help offset the cost of reviewing applications, issuing permits, and carrying out inspections throughout construction. They're part of delivering the service - not simply paying for permission to build.
