Spring Boating Season Returns to Whitby

Boating season is back in Whitby, with Port Whitby Marina now open on Lake Ontario. The award-winning marina offers more than 420 slips, on-site storage, and direct lake access via the Gordon Street boat launch.

As activity picks up on the water, Town officials are reminding residents to keep safety top of mind—especially during unpredictable spring conditions.

Whitby takes a comprehensive approach to waterfront safety, combining prevention, education, and emergency preparedness. Here’s how you can stay safe this season:

  • Dress for the water, not the weather
  • Wear a properly fitted personal flotation device (PFD)
  • Use caution near shorelines and fast-moving water
  • Check marine weather before heading out
  • Never drink if boating or swimming
  • Carry required safety equipment, including communication tools
  • Have a valid Pleasure Craft Operator Certificate (PCOC)
  • Share your trip plan with someone on shore

Supporting Safe Boating in Whitby

Emergency preparedness is a key part of Whitby’s safety efforts. Each year, as part of their ongoing training, Whitby Fire and Emergency Services conducts water rescue training at the waterfront, learning essential skills such as swim tests, rope work, and rescue scenarios to prepare for real-life emergencies. View a video of them in action.

Waterfront safety is also supported by your local Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary units — PARA Marine Search and Rescue and COMRA Marine Search and Rescue. Both are dedicated volunteer teams that respond to emergencies on Lake Ontario alongside police, fire services, and the Canadian Coast Guard.
