Short Term On Street Parking Registration



The Town of Whitby Traffic By-law permits on-street parking for a maximum of 3 hours unless otherwise prohibited by posted signs (such as "No-Parking" zones, Fire Routes, etc.). This by-law is in effect all year long. In addition to the maximum 3-hour parking limit, vehicles are not permitted to be parked on the street between 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. from November 1 to April 15. Vehicles parked in contravention of these regulations may be issued a parking ticket.

Why Short-Term On-Street
Parking Registration is Needed

On occasion, residents have special circumstances that require vehicles to be parked on the street for longer than 3 hours or during the 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. overnight parking period in effect from November 1 to April 15.

Special circumstances include out-of-town guests, parties and celebrations, holiday gatherings, family functions, driveway repairs, and home renovations.

The Town of Whitby tries to accommodate these special circumstances by allowing on-street parking registration on a temporary basis. Each household in the Town is permitted to make a maximum of 12 requests for on-street parking registration each calendar year.

Each request may be for a maximum of 7 days in duration. On-street parking registration is not intended to be a solution for residents who routinely have more vehicles than parking spaces on their property.

Residents can register vehicles for on-street parking by completing the On-Street Parking Online Registration Form.If you require any assistance, please contact Parking Services at 905.430.4322 or with the plate number of the vehicle(s). Voicemail and email systems are open 24 hours a day.

For large events, or on-street registration for condominiums or apartment complexes please provide two weeks notice. Please contact Transportation Services for Large events.

Please be advised that no physical permit will be issued to allow parking on the street for longer than 3 hours or between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. from November 1 to April 15.

Note: On-street parking registration is provided as a courtesy to residents by the Town of Whitby. On-street parking is in no way a vested right. The Town reserves the right to cancel, revoke or refuse any request for registration. In the event of snow plowing/removal operations, all registrations are revoked and all vehicles are required to be removed from the streets to allow for the efficient and safe removal of ice and snow.

Is Your Vehicle Eligible for Short-Term On-Street Parking?

The short-term on-street parking registration program is available for the majority of standard sized vehicles, provided that vehicles are being registered for special circumstances.  However, pursuant to the provisions of Town of Whitby Traffic By-law and in an effort to keep roadways safe and to maintain pleasing streetscapes, the following types of vehicles are not eligible to register for short-term on-street parking registration.

  • Commercial use vehicles measuring more than 2.6 meters in width or 7.0 meters in length or weighing more than 5,000 kg
  • Recreational vehicles, camper trailers, pop-up trailers and open landscaping trailers measuring more than 2.0 meters in height or 7.0 meters in length
  • Closed trailers measuring more than 2.6 meters in height or 4.0 meters in length

Details Required

The following information must be provided:

  • licence plate, make, and colour of each vehicle parking on street
  • if registering a trailer, please provide a description of the type of trailer (camper trailer, pop-up trailer, open landscaping trailer, closed landscaping trailer) along with the width and length of the trailer
  • beginning and end dates the vehicles are expected to be parked on street
  • reasons why vehicles will be parked on street
  • resident's name, daytime phone number, and home address

Parking Tickets Issued To Vehicles Registered for Short-Term On-Street Parking

If you submit a request for short-term on-street parking by telephone, email or through the online form with less then 2 business day minimum, the Town's Parking Enforcement staff may not be aware of your request. As such, a request for parking registration does not guarantee that a vehicle will not receive a parking ticket.  In addition, should your vehicle fall within one of the ineligible vehicle categories identified above or does not comply with the Traffic By-law, your vehicle will be subject to a ticket.

If you receive a parking ticket for parking longer than the 3-hour maximum, or for parking between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. from November 1 to April 15, please contact Parking Services at 905.430.4322 or by email to review the situation. Parking Services maintains electronic records of all requests for parking registration and will review your particular situation to determine if it is appropriate to cancel a parking ticket.

Note: Parking tickets issued for any infraction other than parking longer than the 3-hour maximum, or for parking between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. from November 1 to April 15, such as parking in fire route, stopping on a sidewalk, parking in a prohibited area, etc., will not be reviewed. Parking tickets issued for these offences must be paid, reviewed through a First Attendance Parking Ticket Review or a trial requested.
