The Town of Whitby collects green bin (organic) waste weekly on your regular collection day.
Place your green bin at the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day and remove any additional locking mechanisms, such as bungee cords before collection.
As of July 1, 2024, more items can go in the Green Bin! Diapers, pet waste and sanitary products are now accepted. Please keep Green Bins under 20 kilograms (44 pounds). Bins that are overweight will not be collected. Residents can order an additional green bin at a reduced rate of $10 per container while quantities last. To get your additional Green Bin please submit the online purchase form.
The Region of Durham provides new and replacement green bins if you have moved into a new residence or need a replacement bin for one that has broken. You can buy an extra green bin from the Region for a fee.
Ensure all green bin organic waste is securely bagged. Egg cartons and fiber fast food drink trays can go in loose. All other loose organics will not be collected.
Look up items on the Whitby Waste Wizard to determine if your waste item belongs in the green bin.
Wash your curbside green bin and any kitchen catchers with mild detergent or with white vinegar and water, as needed. You can also place your kitchen catcher in the dishwasher.
To reduce odours, try storing meat, poultry, fish and bone waste in the freezer until your collection day.
Backyard composting is an easy and inexpensive way to provide essential nutrients to your lawn and garden, plus you will reduce your household waste. Visit the Region of Durham for more information.
