Whitby Fire recruits practice vital water rescue techniques at the Whitby waterfront.

As part of ongoing emergency preparedness, thirteen firefighter recruits from Whitby Fire and Emergency Services recently completed intensive water rescue training at the Whitby waterfront. The training ensures first responders are equipped with the latest life-saving techniques – just in time for the busy summer season on the water.

With more residents and visitors expected to enjoy lakeside activities over the coming months, Whitby Fire reminds the community to stay water safe by taking a few simple precautions:

How to Stay Safe on the Water This Summer:

• Teach Kids Water Safety: Enroll children in programs that build water awareness and skills. The Whitby Yacht Club offers sailing camps and youth courses for ages 7–17. Learn more at wyc.ca.
• Avoid Risky Behaviours: Never swim or operate a boat under the influence of alcohol. Check the marine weather forecast before heading out and avoid going out in unsafe conditions.
• Be Prepared: Always carry safety essentials when boating – life jackets for everyone, flares, a first aid kit, and a marine radio for emergencies.
• Get Trained: Take a boating safety course at The Port Whitby Marina and Whitby Yacht Club. Ensure your boater’s license is valid and onboard – visit  canada.ca/PleasureCraftOperatorCard for details.
• Respect Waterfront Signage: Posted signs are there to protect you – follow all rules and warnings near the water.
