A vibrant new public art installation is coming to Thickson Road between Dundas Street and Nichol Avenue, adding beauty and character to one of Whitby’s key corridors.

After gathering community feedback on three shortlisted design concepts earlier this year, a jury has selected the winning design Flutter — a captivating sculptural installation featuring artistic representations of butterflies. Created by Ontario-based artist Nicolas Crombach, Flutter was selected for its imaginative design and strong connection to nature.

The installation aims to enhance the streetscape by creating a sense of place, offering visual interest for both pedestrians and drivers, and contributing to the ongoing beautification of the area.

Keep an eye out as Flutter takes flight along Thickson Road in 2026 — a creative new landmark welcoming residents and visitors alike.

• A Call for Artists was launched in summer 2024, and 12 submissions were received.
• Earlier this year, nearly 400 residents took a survey on Connect Whitby to share their feedback on three possible art designs for Thickson Road.
• In the winning design, Flutter will see 4 butterfly art pieces installed at various points along Thickson Road.
