Congratulations to grade six student Colin Lepre who has been selected as the 2024 Whitby Junior Fire Chief.
Colin goes to Chris Hadfield Public School and was selected from graduates of this year's Junior Firefighter Summer Camp for his outstanding knowledge of fire safety, active engagement, and willingness to assist his peers.
This morning, Colin celebrated his achievement with a special school presentation and a fire truck ride to Whitby Fire Station #5 where he began his first day as Junior Fire Chief learning how firefighters extinguish vehicle fires, techniques for auto extrication, and the responsibilities of a Fire Chief. He also had the unique opportunity to lead a mock emergency scenario and explore various roles within the fire service.
Over the next year, Colin will accompany Whitby firefighters at several community events, furthering his understanding of fire safety and community engagement.
The Junior Fire Chief for the Year Contest is supported by the Durham District School Board and is made possible through the generous sponsorship of Metro Inc. and McDonald’s Whitby.
Colin embodies the qualities we seek in a Junior Fire Chief. His unwavering commitment to fire safety and his enthusiasm for learning make him an outstanding candidate for this position. We are excited to welcome him to our team for the upcoming year.
