Did you know? The Town has an interactive map where you can view updates about construction projects in the Town of Whitby.
August 2025 to 2028
Work will take about three years and requires coordination with multiple agencies and utilities. Detour routes will be posted, but all north/south roads crossing Columbus Road will remain open. This project supports growth in Brooklin and Whitby.
The relocation of hydro poles to the south side of Columbus Road to allow widening from 2 to 5 lanes (even more at intersections) is currently underway. This 2.2 km relocation is the first step and should wrap up by late 2025. Trees and brush will be cleared in late 2025 to early 2026, following environmental rules. This must be done by April 1, 2026. Bell and other utilities will also adjust their infrastructure. Major road construction begins in 2026, including new water crossings and water/sewer line installation.
June 2025 to September 2025
Work includes a four-week closure of the Whitby Waterfront Trail through Shirley Scott Park (at Front and Brock Streets). A small section of trail through the park is closed to the public to support the construction of a new pop-up visitor centre. Trail users can still access the waterfront trail along Front Street, reconnecting on Brock Street. This project is funded through a federal Tourism Growth Program Grant.
June 2025 to September 2025
Work includes removal of base and top asphalt, curb and sidewalk repairs as required, new base and top asphalt, and driveway and sod restoration.
July 2025 to December 2025
Work includes complete replacement of White Bridge on Columbus Road West over Lynde Creek. Bridge will be widened to accommodate bike lanes and sidewalks. Work will also include creek re-alignment and landscaping.
September 2025 to November 2025
Work will consist of redefining the profile and shape of the existing ditches on the north side from Baldwin Street East to the East end of Brawley Road.
It's important to know that not all construction projects happening in Whitby are being run by the Town. Some projects are being run by Bell, Rogers, developers, Durham Region, and more.
