The pay for each election day worked is $350 for all Election Worker positions. Compensation for a two-hour mandatory in-person training session in advance of the election is included in your pay.

Election Worker Recruitment is Now Open!
To support the 2026 Whitby Municipal Election, nearly 300 people will be needed to work at voting locations during the advance voting period between October 22 and 25 and on Voting Day on October 26. Voting locations will be set up at local schools and community gathering places throughout the Town.
The important positions being hired are Vote Tabulator Operators, Deputy Returning Officers, Poll Clerks, and Greeters. The Town is looking for residents with previous election experience, intermediate to advanced computer skills, and the ability to deliver excellent customer service. - Vote Tabulator Operator - responsible for receiving completed ballots from electors and casting ballots through the tabulator
- Deputy Returning Officer - responsible for providing electors with the proper ballot for casting their vote
- Poll Clerk - responsible for verifying electors information before they receive a ballot and for adjusting and correcting electors information on the Voters’ List
- Greeter - responsible for assisting and directing electors to the Voting Room within the Voting Location
The hours of work for each day will be from 8:30 a.m. to approximately 9:00 p.m. Election Workers will receive compensation of $350 for each day that they work during the election and will be required to attend a two-hour Election Worker training session in September/October. Compensation for the training session is included in the daily rate noted above.
Election Worker interviews will be scheduled in July and August.

Important Payment, Deduction, and Income Tax Information
You will be paid via direct deposit through the Town’s payroll system. Payment by direct deposit will occur approximately three weeks after Voting Day on October 26.
Required Documents for Payment
You are required to attend your in-person training session with your Social Insurance Number and direct deposit banking information (e.g. void cheque or direct deposit information including bank transit number (up to 5 digits), account number (up to 7 digits), and branch number, which is the first 4 digits of the transit number). This information will be used during the training session to setup direct deposit to facilitate payment.
If you work the Advance Vote period and on Voting Day, you can view and print copies of your Record of Employment by creating and/or accessing your My Service Canada Account.
If you work the Advance Vote period and on Voting Day, you are subject to statutory deductions that may include income tax, Employment Insurance, and Canada Pension Plan contributions.
T4 slips are issued if statutory deductions are made from your election pay and will be issued by the Town’s Compensation & Employee Services Division in mid to late February 2027. If you only work on Voting Day, you will not be issued a T4 slip as there will be no statutory deductions.
Compensation for a two-hour mandatory in-person training is included in your pay. Please note that if you attend training but do not fulfill your work assignment, you will not be paid. If you don’t attend training, you will be removed from your work assignment.
