Heritage Registry

The Municipal Heritage Register is an official list of properties that have been identified as having, or potentially having, culturally or historically important features. This includes a list of designated and non-designated properties as well as properties located within a Heritage Conservation District.

If you own a property that is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, you may qualify for a heritage property tax rebate.

Removal from the Heritage Register

The Town has established a formal process for requests to remove properties from the Heritage Register.

Please contact Heritage Planning staff for Information on the de-listing process.

If you'd like to remove your property from the Heritage Register you need to complete the Removal of Non-Designated Property Application and submit it by email or by mail to:

Your application should include a:

  • Cultural Heritage Impact Assessment or Cultural Heritage Evaluation Report
  • Pictures of the current property
  • Certified title search
  • Other information may also be required

The process for removing your property from the Heritage Register includes:

  • Submission of a completed application
  • Review of the application and supporting materials by Heritage Planning staff, followed by a recommendation to the Heritage Whitby Advisory Committee
  • Review by Committee regarding a recommendation to Council about the request to remove the property from the Register
  • Decision by Council about whether to remove the property from the Heritage Register or designate the property under the Ontario Heritage Act

Heritage permits

If you own a designated property, you will need to apply for a heritage permit in order to do any alteration, addition, construction and/or renovation on your property.
