Smoking in Outdoor Public Places
In the Town of Whitby, we are committed to ensuring that air is clean and safe to breathe. Second-hand smoke is associated with a variety of healthy issues, especially for young children and other vulnerable populations. In order to protect public health, we've issued a Smoking Restrictions By-law that regulates smoking in certain areas.
Where do smoking restrictions apply?
The Smoking Restrictions By-law prohibits smoking on the following Town properties:
- All parks including all playground areas, recreational fields, soccer pitches, lacrosse fields and boxes, multi-purpose fields, baseball diamonds, splash pads, tennis courts, skateboard parks, bocce courts, lawn bowling greens, off leash dog parks, beaches, and picnic shelters
- All libraries and library properties
- All recreation centres and recreation centre properties
- All arenas and arena properties
- All municipal event areas during Town organized events
The by-law also regulates smoking on the following Town properties:
- Smoking is not permitted within 20 m of Town Hall and other municipal administration buildings
- Smoking is not permitted on marina properties, except in designated smoking areas located at least 20 m from marina buildings
Regulating smoking in outdoor public places helps to protect the health of residents, especially children and youth, and promotes healthy lifestyles and wellness for all ages.
No smoking signs
We post signs at all municipal facilities and parks notifying you about the smoking restrictions. If you're unsure about the regulations in a certain area, look for a sign.
File a complaint
You can file a by-law complaint if you believe someone isn't following the regulations in the by-law.
All complaints, including emails, must contain the complainant's name, address and phone number. Please note that all personal information about complainants will remain confidential.
