Sidewalk Snow Clearing

Ice and snow on sidewalks can cause a slipping hazard during the winter months and is a danger to the community. If you own property in the Town of Whitby, you're required to clear ice and snow from all sidewalks and walkways that border your property. These regulations are outlined in the Property and Boulevard Maintenance By-law.

Timeline for snow removal

After a snowfall, you have 24 hours to remove ice and snow from the sidewalks surrounding your property. Failure to comply with the by-law may result in the Town clearing the snow and charging you for the service.

General guidelines

Review the following guidelines to ensure that you meet the snow removal regulations in the Property and Boulevard Maintenance By-law:

  • Don't deposit snow, ice or slush onto the street or roadway
  • Don't' move or relocate snow on the highway
  • Don't deposit snow, ice or slush in a way that blocks visibility or fire hydrants

Snow and windrow clearing program

If you're over the age of 65 or have a disability, you're eligible for the Town's snow and windrow clearing program. We'll help you clear the snow from the sidewalks around your property.

File a complaint

You can file a by-law complaint if you believe someone isn't following the regulations in the by-law.

All complaints, including emails, must contain the complainant's name, address and phone number. Please note that all personal information about complainants will remain confidential.
