Idling of Vehicles

The Town of Whitby is committed to promoting clean air, free from harmful pollutants. As a results, we've developed an Anti-Idling By-law to reduce the pollution caused by unnecessary vehicle idling.

Idling regulations

According to the Anti-Idling By-law, you can't idle your vehicle for five minutes or longer in the Town of Whitby. This by-law isn't effective when:

  • The outside air temperature is below 5°C or above 27°C
  • Emergency services vehicles including police, fire and ambulance, are engaged in operational activities
  • Idling is required as part of a repair process or to prepare a vehicle for servicing
  • Vehicles remain motionless because of an emergency, traffic or weather conditions over which the driver has no control
  • Vehicles are engaged in municipal operations and the idling of the vehicle is necessary

Enforcement

This by-law is enforced by Whitby By-law Services. Failure to comply could results in a fine.

You can file a by-law complaint if you believe someone isn't following the regulations in the by-law.

All complaints, including emails, must contain the complainant's name, address and phone number. Please note that all personal information about complainants will remain confidential.
