By-Law and Permits for Posting Signs

The Town of Whitby's Permanent Sign By-law and Temporary Sign By-law provide regulations and restrictions that guide the construction of signs.

Permanent Sign Application

The following three options for submitting the complete Permanent Sign Permit Application are:

In person - at 3050 Garden St., Unit 102

Email - buildingpermits@whitby.ca

Drop box - outside Town Hall located at 575 Rossland Rd. E.

Temporary Mobile Signs

Please include the following information with your temporary sign permit application:

  • Site plan drawing showing the location of the proposed sign on your property
  • A Letter of Authorization if you aren't the owner of the property
  • Complete and signed application
  • Details of the sign dimensions

View the Temporary Sign By-law for more information about the use  of  temporary mobile signs. A temporary mobile  sign can be put up for 15 to 60 days. View the temporary mobile sign permit guidelines:

  • Temporary signs must be located on private property at least 1 m from all property lines including the municipal boulevard
  • Temporary signs must be located at least 3 m from all driveway entrances onto the property
  • On properties containing six commercial/industrial units or less, only one temporary sign is permitted at any given time
  • On properties containing more than six units, two temporary signs are permitted at any give time as long as the signs are at least 60 m apart
  • Temporary signs are not permitted if they occupy parking spaces in a parking lot

Fee

  • It costs $212.00 to apply for a temporary mobile sign permit. Fees are subject to change.
  • Borrowed time inquiries have an annual fee of $53.00 as per the Town's Fees and Charges By-law#7220-17

Sign variance application

It is strongly recommended that you design your sign to comply with the Sign By-law whenever possible.

If it is not possible to comply with the provision(s) of the Sign By-law, an application for a variance or an amendment to the Sign By-law may be submitted through our Online Application Portal.
