Low Income Seniors

The Town of Whitby offers two property tax support programs to help low-income seniors.

Tax rebate

Download or contact us for a copy of the Application for Low Income Property Tax Rebate Program. Please submit the application form and a copy of your GIS (Guaranteed Income Supplement) letter for the current year to prove that you qualify by email or send it to:

Applications are due in our office by December 31 each year in order to qualify for that year. Only one rebate will be awarded to each eligible tax roll number per year.

 

In order to qualify for the tax reduction, you must:

  • Be at least 65 years old
  • Receive an annual income that qualifies for the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), under the Old Age Security Act (If you do not have your current GIS renewal letter, please call Service Canada at 1.800.277.9914)
  • Own and occupy property in the Town of Whitby as your principal residence

Tax deferral

This program is currently closed and will re-open when the next Province wide re-assessment takes place with the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation.

The Regional reassessment deferral program is available to low-income seniors where the eligible property owners is 65 years or older and receives the Federal Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS).

This program is also available to low-income persons with a disability who are eligible for the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP).

Under this program, eligible residential homeowners may be able to defer annual reassessment related tax increases, in excess of five per cent or $100, on their personal residence.

When this program re-opens Contact us for a copy of the Tax Deferral Application. Please submit the form and proof that you qualify by email or send it to:

Application for this program must be made annually to ensure continued eligibility. 

Please note

This deferral is a lien on your property due and payable in full once you sell your house or transfer ownership.

Deferral amount will be calculated on the portion of your tax increase related to reassessment that is over $100.00 and you must:

  • Be at least 65 years old
  • Receive an annual income that qualifies for the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), under the Old Age Security Act (If you do not have your current GIS renewal letter, please call Service Canada at 1.800.277.9914)
  • Own and occupy property in the Town of Whitby as your principal residence
