Street Lighting
Streetlights help to enhance your visibility, security and overall safety as you travel by vehicle, bike or foot throughout the Town of Whitby.
Report a streetlight problem
If you see a streetlight that is not working properly, report the streetlight problem to our Operations Centre.
Possible streetlight malfunctions include:
- Fails to turn on during the night
- Fails to turn off during the day
- Cycles on and off
- Visible damage to the pole, bracket or light
- Wires hanging from pole
- Hand Hole cover is open
When you report a streetlight issue, please be as specific as possible by including:
- Closest street address (house number, if available)
- Pole number (located on the pole just above eye level, on the side closest to the road)
- Details of the problem
Our street lights
We have around 12,480 streetlights with various styles, age and conditions. We maintain all of our street lights and approximately 8,390 street light poles.
LED streetlight conversion program
To engage in more innovative and sustainable solutions for our streetlights, we converted the High Pressure Sodium (HPS) streetlights to new Light Emitting Diode (LED) street lights.
Why make the switch to LED?
LED has become the technology of choice for many communities because of its positive effects. If we can make this positive change, we can reap these benefits:
- Consuming less hydro and reducing our energy consumption
- Lowering carbon dioxide equivalents and light pollution
- Reducing maintenance costs
- Improving lighting distribution
- Making a positive impact to our environment
- Dark Sky Compliant
