Whitby Introduces New Process for Traffic Calming Requests

New approach brings consistency to how eligible requests are reviewed and prioritized.

The Town of Whitby is introducing a new, more consistent process for how community requests related to traffic calming measures are assessed and prioritized for Town roads.

Traffic calming measures are changes to roads - like speed humps, speed cushions, raised crosswalks, curb extensions, and mini (neighbourhood) roundabouts - designed to slow traffic and support safe roads.

Why a New Process Was Needed

Each year, the Town receives many requests for traffic calming on residential neighbourhood streets. Previously, Whitby did not have a Town-wide policy setting out a consistent process for assessing and prioritizing those requests.

On June 22 (2026), Whitby Council approved the Town’s new Traffic Calming Policy, creating one clear, consistent, and data-driven process for evaluating traffic calming requests across Whitby.

Here’s how the new process works:

• Request: Residents can submit a request online for an eligible Town road.
• Review: The Town reviews the request and, where appropriate, collects and assesses traffic and road data.
• Assess and Prioritize: Locations that meet the criteria are evaluated and prioritized alongside other eligible locations.
• Consult: Community input is gathered before proposed measures move forward.

Before submitting a request, residents are encouraged to learn more and check whether their street is eligible at whitby.ca/TraffiCalming.

Quick Facts

• More than 900 people provided feedback through the Town’s traffic calming survey and interactive mapping exercise to inform the new Policy and process.
• The top traffic-related concerns identified through that engagement were speeding, traffic volume, dangerous driving, cut-through traffic, and school zones.
• Not every request will result in traffic calming measures. Eligible locations are assessed using consistent criteria and prioritized alongside other locations across Whitby.
• The new process applies to eligible Town roads omly. Regional roads, provincial highways, and private roads are not included.
