Special Event Permits

Planning an Event and not sure where to Start?

A special event permit is required for events that occur on Town Property (whether or not registration or fees to attend/participate are required) and are open to the public with any of the following, regardless of the event size:

  • Alcohol served
  • Fires, fireworks, pyrotechnics
  • Food being given or sold
  • Road closure or use of road, sidewalk or trail for walks, runs, or cycling events
  • Tents larger than approximately 20 by 30 feet (or 60 square metres)
  • Inflatables such as bouncy castles or amusement rides
  • Merchandise vendors selling goods or wares
  • Lottery or games of chance

Parades and Major Special Events Permit

To apply for a special events permit for larger events please email the Events Team at eventpermits@whitby.ca to get started with your application and check on availability of your date and event site.

Events on Private Property

Events taking place entirely on private property do not require permission or a permit from the Town of Whitby except when the general public or neighbourhood may be impacted by parking or noise.  Please contact bylaw@whitby.ca to find out more.

Street or Neighbourhood Block Party Closures

Please contact clerks@whitby.ca to find out more about the requirements for hosting a neighbourhood event.

Application Timelines

The application timelines below are in place when applying to host a special event:

  • 30 days prior to the event if fewer than 100 people per day are expected
  • 60 days prior to the event if between 100 and 500 people per day are expected
  • 90 days prior to the event if between 500 and 5,000 people per day are expected
  • 120 days prior to the event if more than 5,000 people per day are expected
