Whitby's Urban Forest

Houses surrounded by trees

The Town of Whitby is committed to maintaining, protecting, and enhancing its urban forest. Our trees are a vital part of the community, contributing to environmental health, supporting biodiversity, reducing the effects of climate change, and improving overall quality of life.

Covering approximately 25.5% of Whitby’s land area, our trees provide an estimated $6.4 million in annual benefits, ranging from carbon capture and cleaner air to stormwater management. They also store between $57 to $80 million worth of carbon.

But beyond the numbers, trees offer so much more. They provide habitat for wildlife, support mental well-being, beautify our neighbourhoods, and enrich daily life.

Whitby’s urban forest is more than just trees. it is a living asset that helps make our community greener, healthier, and more vibrant.

In 2024, the Town of Whitby was one of 210 cities worldwide to receive Tree Cities of the World recognition. This program is led by the Arbour Day Foundation, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations alongside its Canadian partner, Tree Canada.

Its purpose is to connect cities around the world in a new network dedicated to sharing and adopting the most successful approaches to managing community trees and forests

The Town of Whitby is developing a comprehensive 20-year Urban Forest Management Plan to enhance, protect, and sustain our urban forest for future generations. This long-term strategy will guide how we care for trees, expand canopy coverage, and respond to environmental challenges such as climate change, invasive species, and urban development.
