Whitby Invites Residents to Celebrate the Grand Opening of the Fieldgate Sports Complex
Free family-friendly event on September 12 will showcase Whitby's newest recreation destination.
On Saturday, September 12, Whitby will celebrate more than the opening of a new facility – it will celebrate a community vision brought to life.
The Town of Whitby is inviting residents and visitors to the Official Grand Opening of the Fieldgate Sports Complex, one of the largest and most ambitious recreation projects in Whitby's history.
The free event will feature drop-in programs and activities throughout the day for all to enjoy. Special guests will also be part of the Grand Opening celebration, including Olympic figure skating champion Elvis Stojko.
More than a recreation facility, the Fieldgate Sports Complex represents a significant investment in the health, well-being, and quality of life of residents. The new complex will create expanded opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to play, compete, connect, and stay active close to home.

Event Details and Activities
The Grand Opening Celebration will take place on Saturday, September 12, 2026.

- Time:
- 9:30 to 10 a.m. – Official Opening Ceremony and Ribbon Cutting
- 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. – Free family-friendly activities and drop-in programs throughout the facility
Residents can explore the new complex and enjoy activities for all ages, including:
- Get Active: try badminton, pickleball, basketball, dance, fitness activities, and more
- Make a Splash: take part in an Aquatics Fun Day in the new pool
- Hit the Ice: enjoy open skating, hockey, ringette, and more
- Get Creative: take part in arts and crafts and meet the artist behind one of the facility's public art installations
- Explore and Learn: take a behind-the-scenes and/or self-guided video tour to learn more about the design of the facility, meet the architect, and learn about sustainable and accessible features built into the complex
- Get A Sneak Peek of the Outdoor Spaces: check out the pickleball, soccer, basketball, tennis, and lacrosse spaces as final touches continue to be made.
- Go green: on-site EV chargers will be available free of charge from September 12 to October 12.
Food trucks will also be available on-site.

- Located west of Baldwin Street South and south of Highway 407, the approximately 15,200-square-metre (approx. 164,000-square-foot) facility will serve as a premier destination for recreation, sport, and community connection.
- Construction on the Fieldgate Sports Complex officially began with a groundbreaking ceremony in September 2023.
- Amenities include a twin-pad arena, Durham’s largest aquatics centre, double gymnasium with walking track, and community and program spaces.
- The complex also includes a 13-acre outdoor park featuring pickleball, tennis, and basketball courts, Whitby’s first artificial turf field, skatepark, pump track, playground and more – added as a direct result of community feedback.
