Meet Whitby’s 2026 Mayor’s Senior Volunteer Award Recipient: Catherine Vandenhoogen
Whitby resident Catherine Vandenhoogen has been named the 2026 Mayor’s Senior Volunteer Award winner. The honour comes during a milestone year for the community as Whitby’s 55+ Centre celebrates its 50th anniversary.
We had the chance to ask Catherine some questions related to her ongoing commitment to making a difference close to home.
Question 1
What motivates you to continue to give back to the community?
I think the answer to that question is that I get back more than I give.
Question 2
What are some of the organizations you volunteer with?
Over the years, I have volunteered at a number of places. The first was serving veterans dinner at Sunnybrook Hospital. I had no idea what it would be like, but my dad had been in the service. It was a way to honour him. Next, I started to volunteer at Tennis Canada in a stadium control position. My friend was doing it, so I tried it out. Last year, I celebrated 20 years of service in the same role. I feel I help make the day special for the patrons by being able to assist in numerous ways. Once my grandchildren started school, I volunteered in their classrooms. Since I retired as a program support teacher, I saw that it was a great fit. Each year, I volunteer at the golf tournament for Grandview Kids. Just like when I started to volunteer at tennis, my friend volunteered at this event, so I joined the group a number of years ago since it is a good organization. As for volunteering on the palliative floor at Lakeridge Health, my mom passed away in that hospital. The staff was wonderful to her. Presently, I am in my eleventh year on that floor, and I hope I have many more.
Question 3
What was your first reaction when you heard you were the 2026 Mayor's Senior Volunteer Award winner?
When I heard the Mayor say my name, it brought tears to my eyes. I have never felt that what I do was award-worthy because helping people in need makes my day. Also, I had already read the write-up that my granddaughter Madelyn had submitted, and I was thrilled.
Question 4
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about volunteering?
First, make sure you have the interest and time to volunteer. If you know someone who is involved in that role, ask questions about what the role entails. Often, there is a list of volunteer positions in Whitby and the surrounding area that you may want to inquire about.
