Here’s what’s new:

113 Hectares in Whitby Now Contributing to Canada’s 30×30 Target

The Town of Whitby, in collaboration with Ontario Nature, has formally recognized 113.28 hectares of existing Town‑owned natural heritage lands as part of Canada’s 30×30 conservation target—a national commitment to protect 30% of lands and waters by 2030. These 113.28 hectares of forest, wetland, valley, waterway, and coastal habitats were already conserved through existing municipal policies and protections and are now formally recognized within provincial and national conservation reporting. Together, these lands form an interconnected network that supports biodiversity and climate resilience, providing habitat for at least eight species at risk, including the Monarch butterfly, Butternut, and Midland Painted Turtle. They also continue to deliver important benefits to residents, such as flood protection, water filtration, carbon storage, and opportunities to connect with nature.

Did you know Durham Trees is a subsidized tree planting program available to private landowners, including residents, and businesses? Properties with space to plant a minimum of 100 trees may qualify for support. The program offers up to 85% funding for eligible projects, full planting services, native tree seedlings, and potted trees. Planting trees can help increase your property value, improve privacy, reduce home energy costs, cut down on mowing, and more. Sign up today.

It’s the perfect time to go for a ride through your neighbourhood. For a map of our trails, multi-use path, bike lanes, and six bike repair stands, visit whitby.ca/Cycling.

Green Development Spotlight

Station No. 3, a new condo building in downtown Whitby by Brookfield Residential, has achieved ENERGY STAR® Multifamily High-Rise certification, making it the first building in Whitby to receive this designation. ENERGY STAR® certification confirms that the building uses less energy than a typical new building, helping to reduce emissions and energy costs. The building was designed to meet the Tier 1 energy efficiency requirements under the Whitby Green Standard, with its performance independently reviewed and certified through a national program run by Natural Resources Canada. This achievement helps show how new development in Whitby is supporting energy efficiency and the Town’s climate goals.

Ongoing Support and Resources:

Floodproofing helps make your property and belongings resilient to flood damage. There are two main approaches. Dry-proofing keeps water out of a building using measures like temporary guards, covers for vents, watertight doors, floodwalls, or permanent upgrades such as sealing cracks and elevating windows and doors. Wet-proofing allows water to enter and exit safely by using flood-resistant materials, installing wall openings, raising electrical components, and keeping lower areas unfinished. Understanding these options can help increase your property’s resilience to flooding. Learn more about retrofit options that can help protect your property from flooding.

The Energy Affordability Program from Save on Energy helps eligible Ontario households reduce energy use and lower monthly bills by offering free energy-saving upgrades. The program has two support options depending on income and needs:

·       Comprehensive Support: Households that qualify receive a free in-home energy assessment from an energy-efficiency expert, along with upgrades such as energy-efficient appliances, insulation, LED light bulbs, and other energy-efficiency improvements.

·       Energy Saving Kits: Eligible households can receive a free kit with easy-to-install products like LED light bulbs, weather-stripping, showerheads, faucet aerators, and retractable clothesline to help reduce energy use at home. Learn more.
