Facts. Not Fiction: Why Doesn't the Fieldgate Sports Complex Have a Fitness Centre?

"The Town forgot to include a fitness centre at the new Fieldgate Sports Complex."

We've heard this one quite a bit. Here's the truth:

The Fieldgate Sports Complex was shaped through years of planning, technical studies, and extensive community engagement to understand what residents wanted most from a new recreation facility.

The feedback was clear. Residents placed a higher priority on additional ice pads, aquatics, gymnasium space, flexible community programming areas, and expanded outdoor recreation opportunities. 

In response to the strong community interest in outdoor recreation, the Town acquired an additional 14 acres of land adjacent to the complex. That additional space allowed the project to deliver more of the outdoor amenities residents said they wanted while also providing room to support future recreation opportunities as Whitby continues to grow.

The Fieldgate Sports Complex truly was built by the community, for the community.

Today, the Fieldgate Sports Complex includes a twin-pad arena, Durham Region's largest competition pool, a double gymnasium with an indoor walking track, flexible community spaces, and Roybrook Park featuring pickleball, tennis and basketball courts, Whitby's first multi-purpose artificial turf field, a skatepark, pump track, playground, open green space and more.

Projects like this are a reminder that public engagement matters.

When the Town asks for feedback through surveys, public meetings, or Connect Whitby, those comments help shape decisions. The Fieldgate Sports Complex is a great example. Residents didn't just influence the design; they helped determine what amenities would be built, where additional investment would be made, and how the site would evolve to better meet the community's needs.

A Note on Community Engagement

The Fieldgate Sports Complex project involved years of planning and multiple opportunities for community input, with more than 2,700 residents and community partners helping shape the design.

Community engagement isn't mandatory - it's an opportunity. 

While not everyone participates in every survey or consultation, feedback helps inform decisions alongside technical, planning and financial considerations.

In this case, resident feedback helped shape what was included and what was prioritized.
