Facts. Not Fiction: Who Looks After Whitby's Roads?

"The Town owns every road in Whitby."

It's an easy assumption to make. After all, if a road is in Whitby, it must be the Town's responsibility... right? Not always.

Here's what's actually happening.

The Town of Whitby is responsible for maintaining many of the local roads within its boundaries. That includes things like road maintenance, repairs, and snow clearing on Town-owned roads. However, not every road in Whitby belongs to the Town.

Some of the busiest roads in the community are Regional roads, which are owned and maintained by the Region of Durham. Roads such as Taunton Road, Rossland Road, Thickson Road, Lakeridge Road, Dundas Street, Brock Street (north of Rossland Road and south of Highway 401), and Victoria Street are just a few examples. The Region is responsible for maintaining these roads, as well as the traffic signals, signs, storm sewers, and bridges associated with them.

Provincial highways, such as Highway 401, are the responsibility of the Province of Ontario through the Ministry of Transportation.

The surprising part?

Who owns the road also determines who you should contact if there's a problem.

Whether it's a pothole, damaged sign, traffic signal issue, or another concern, reporting it to the organization responsible helps ensure it gets to the right people as quickly as possible.

Understanding who looks after which roads also helps explain why construction schedules, maintenance work, snow clearing, and repairs don't always happen at the same time across the community. Different organizations manage different parts of the transportation network.

Knowing how the system actually works beats the comments section. Every. Time.
