Facts. Not Fiction: We're Renaming Whitby's Waterfront
There is no plan to rename Whitby's waterfront. And we're definitely not renaming Lake Ontario.
Long live Lake Ontario.
But with all the recent attention on the name of the lake, we thought it was a pretty good excuse to talk about something that matters a whole lot more to us:
Whitby's Waterfront
Because if you live in Whitby, it's easy to take it for granted. You drive past it. Walk the trail. Meet friends there. Take the kids to the beach. Watch the boats come in. But stop for a minute and think about what's actually here.
More than a view.
Whitby's waterfront includes three beaches - Iroquois Beach Park, Kiwanis Heydenshore Park, and Lion’s Promenade at Whitby Harbour - with opportunities to relax, walk, picnic and play. Kiwanis Heydenshore also features a playground, splash pad, picnic shelter,s and beach access.
There's the Waterfront Trail, where you can walk or cycle while taking in views of Lake Ontario and the harbour. Recent upgrades to the Corbett Creek section added a 150-metre boardwalk, an 80-metre pedestrian bridge, a wider, more accessible trail, new wayfinding, and landscaping.
And then there's Port Whitby Marina, an award-winning, full-service marina with more than 420 slips. Visitors can paddle, fish, take a sunset sail, launch a boat, explore the harbour, or simply stroll along the waterfront.
There's a lighthouse, too.
A beloved feature of the waterfront, the Whitby Harbour Lighthouse has welcomed boaters into the harbour for generations and remains a symbol of Whitby's connection to the lake.
And the waterfront comes alive.
The waterfront isn't just somewhere to pass through.
The waterfront brings people together through experiences like Culture Pop-Ups, and other events throughout the year. The popular Town Brewery Pop-Up in the historic Pump House adds to the experience, offering a unique place to gather, enjoy local food and beer, and take in the harbour views.
Whitby's waterfront is continuing to evolve.
The waterfront continues to be a place to connect, explore, and enjoy. From the seasonal Visitor's Centre and glow-in-the-dark kayak rentals to ongoing trail improvements, marina planning and the future transformation of the historic James Rowe House into a culinary destination and community gathering place, exciting investments are helping shape the next chapter of Whitby's waterfront.
Sometimes the best thing we can do isn't look for something new.
We're keeping the name, the waterfront, and the lake.
So, let's get out there and enjoy it!
