Facts. Not Fiction: Stormwater Management Ponds

The rumour: "Stormwater Management Ponds are just like any other pond and don't serve much of a purpose."

The truth:

Stormwater management ponds are engineered infrastructure designed to help manage rainwater and snowmelt as it runs off roofs, roads, parking lots, and other hard surfaces.

In other words, they're working even when it doesn't look like it.

Stormwater ponds play an important role in helping reduce the risk of flooding by temporarily storing runoff during and after storm events. They also help improve water quality by allowing sediment and pollutants to settle within the pond, before water is released into local creeks or streams.

Without them, heavy rainfall could place additional pressure on stormwater systems and increase the risk of flooding and erosion.

While they may look like recreational ponds, stormwater management ponds are not designed for fishing, swimming, boating, or other water-based activities.

The water can contain pollutants washed off roads, driveways, and parking lots. Water levels can also change quickly during and after storms, and steep banks, soft sediment, and underwater structures can create unexpected hazards.

The same safety concerns apply during the winter months.

Although the surface may appear frozen, water levels beneath the ice can fluctuate as stormwater moves through the pond. This can create thin-ice conditions that are difficult to detect, making skating or walking on the ice unsafe.

That's why residents are encouraged to stay off the ice and enjoy winter activities in designated recreational areas instead.

The surprising part?

Stormwater management starts long before water reaches the pond.

Catch basins and storm drains along roads and in neighbourhoods help direct runoff into the stormwater system. When leaves, litter, or debris block these grates, water can't flow as efficiently through the system, which may lead to flooding.

By keeping storm grates (i.e. manholes and catch basins) near your property clear of leaves and debris when it's safe to do so, residents can help stormwater move where it's designed and intended to go.

Stormwater management ponds may not look like critical infrastructure, but they quietly perform an important job every day — helping protect homes, roads, waterways, and the environment.
