Facts. Not Fiction: Reporting an Issue
"Commenting on a Town Facebook post is the same as reporting an issue."
It's an easy assumption to make.
If you've spotted a pothole, a damaged sign, an overflowing garbage bin, or another issue around town, leaving a comment on one of the Town's social media posts might seem like the quickest way to let us know.
Here's what's actually happening.
The Town's Communications team actively monitors its social media channels and, when we see comments about service issues, we do our best to connect them with the appropriate department - especially if the issue appears urgent or someone has contacted us directly through a direct message.
But social media isn't the Town's official reporting system.
Comments can sometimes be missed, especially on older posts, shared content, or conversations that happen outside the Town's official channels. Social media also doesn't create a service request or provide the information staff need to investigate and resolve an issue as quickly as possible.
That's why the fastest and most effective way to let the Town know about a problem is through whitby.ca/ReportAnIssue
The online reporting tool sends your request directly to the appropriate department, whether it's related to roads, operations, by-law, parks, garbage, traffic, or another municipal service.
Even better, when you submit a report, you'll receive a service request number that you can use to track your inquiry or reference it if you need to follow up.
The surprising part?
Using the Report an Issue tool doesn't just help the Town - it helps you.
Your request gets to the right people faster, includes the details staff need to investigate, and creates a record so your concern can be tracked from start to finish.
Social media is a great place to connect with the Town, learn about what's happening in the community, and ask general questions.
But when something needs attention, Report an Issue is the quickest way to make sure it gets to the right department.
Need help? There's probably a form for that at whitby.ca/ReportAnIssue
