Facts. Not Fiction: Invasive Plant Species

“The Town doesn’t do anything about invasive plant species.”

It's an understandable perception.

When invasive plants continue to appear along trails, in parks, natural areas, and even in our neighbourhoods, it can feel like nothing is being done.

Here are the facts.

Invasive plant species are non-native plants that spread aggressively, outcompeting native vegetation and disrupting local ecosystems. Over time, they can reduce biodiversity, impact wildlife habitat, and make it harder for native species to thrive.

That’s why addressing invasive species is an important part of protecting Whitby’s natural environment.

Currently, the Town responds to invasive plant concerns on municipal lands and takes action in priority areas where management efforts can have the greatest impact. This work is primarily focused on targeted removal of noxious weeds, such as Giant Hogweed, in high-use areas as they are identified.

At the same time, managing invasive plants is a complex, long-term challenge.

Many species spread quickly, can remain dormant for years, and often require sustained management over multiple growing seasons. There is rarely a one-time solution that permanently eliminates them.

Like many municipalities, Whitby’s approach continues to evolve.

That’s why the Town is taking the next step.

An Invasive Species Management Strategy is being developed to help guide a more coordinated, long-term approach. The Strategy will help determine how invasive species are identified, prioritized, and managed across Town-owned lands—and where efforts and resources can have the greatest impact over time.

As part of this work, residents are invited to share their feedback through a community survey. This is an opportunity to help shape future priorities and learn more about the invasive species affecting our community.

As a thank you, participants who complete the survey will have a chance to win a $100 Gift Card to Therma Spa.

The goal isn’t to eliminate every invasive plant overnight. It’s to take a thoughtful, coordinated approach that protects Whitby’s parks, trails, natural areas, and urban forest for years to come.

Knowing how the system actually works beats the comments section. Every. Time.
