Durham Communities Come Together to Support 7,712 Meals Through Hunger Action Month

Durham Region municipalities are thanking residents, businesses, and staff for coming together to support this year's Hunger Action Month campaign.

From September 9 to October 5, communities across Durham generously donated 3,000 pounds of food and raised $2,606 in monetary donations – the equivalent of 7,712 meals – for those in need across the region.

Every donation makes a difference. Contributions will support Feed the Need in Durham and other local community food banks, including Durham Community Action Group, The Salvation Army Hope, Community Development Council Durham, Storehouse Foodbank (Southside Worship Centre) and Christian Faith Outreach Centre, helping individuals and families access the food they need.

The success of this year's campaign comes at a time when demand for food assistance remains high. Last year, more than 880,000 visits were made to food programs across Feed the Need in Durham's network of 70 community food programs. Food bank visits have increased nearly 350 per cent since 2020, and one in four Durham households identifies as being food insecure (source: Feed the Need in Durham).

While Hunger Action Month has ended, the need for food support continues year-round. Residents can continue to make a difference by donating to Feed the Need in Durham or other local food banks. They can also view Feed the Need in Durham's most-needed food items or sign up to volunteer.
