Whitby Prepares for Fieldgate Sports Complex with McKinney Centre Schedule Update

Operational shift focuses on efficiency while maintaining access for local sports groups

As Whitby prepares for the opening of the future Fieldgate Sports Complex, the Town is taking steps to align current facility operations with how local ice and program space is used.

On March 9, Whitby Council approved changing the operating hours at McKinney Centre to focus on the busiest times (primetime), 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., when most activities take place. This change will take effect on June 1, 2026.

The report confirms that one‑time bookings, camps, tournaments, and special events will continue to take place at the McKinney Centre. These changes are expected to save the Town more than $200,000 annually. This helps reduce pressure on the tax base and supports the Town’s commitment to keeping recreation programs affordable, especially as many residents are feeling the impact of rising costs.

Most user groups are expected to see little to no change. The Town will continue working with local sports organizations to monitor demand and plan future program schedules.

This update comes as Whitby prepares for the Fieldgate Sports Complex, which will bring new arenas and more space for sports and recreation, expanding primetime space and meeting community needs during off peak hours.

Quotes

“By aligning McKinney Centre’s operating hours with the times when the facility is used most, we’re making a data-driven decision that ensures local user groups continue to have the access they need, while being mindful of affordability for taxpayers. As demand grows and changes, we will continue to monitor usage trends and adjust operating hours accordingly. This is one example of how we’re delivering on our Community Strategic Plan commitment to accountable and responsive government.”

– Elizabeth Roy, Mayor, Town of Whitby

Part of responsible municipal operations is regularly reviewing how our facilities are used and making adjustments where it makes sense. This change helps to ensure we are directing resources where they are needed most while continuing to plan for Whitby’s growth and future recreational needs.”

– Matt Gaskell, Chief Administrative Officer, Town of Whitby
