Whitby Makes Progress on New East-West Roadway in South Brooklin
Baldwin Street lane restriction and closure on Ashburn Road begin July 2
The Town of Whitby is constructing a new and major east-west roadway in South Brooklin between Cochrane Street/Highway 7 and Britannia Road in Oshawa (see image below).
The new road – currently called the Mid-Block Arterial Roadway – is being built to support future growth, connectivity, and economic development opportunities. The road will also accommodate active transportation, like walking and cycling, with a multi-use path on the north side and a sidewalk on the south side.
The project is currently divided into four phases of construction:
- Phase 1 (from Ashburn Road to the future Garden Street Extension) – now underway
- Phase 2 (from Garden Street Extension to Anderson Street)
- Phase 3 (from Anderson Street to the eastern town limit)
- Phase 4 (from Cochrane Street/Hwy 7 to Ashburn Road)
The Town is now in Phase 1 of construction, which is anticipated to be completed by early 2025. Timing for future phases will be largely dependent on development, traffic demand, funding and property availability, and project approvals.
Road Impacts Anticipated to Begin July 2
As part of this first phase of construction, the Town is notifying residents of the following two upcoming road and bike lane impacts. Both are anticipated to begin Tuesday, July 2 and remain in place until the end of November 2024:
- Baldwin Street – reduced to one lane in each direction south of Highway 7 to allow for road servicing and infrastructure
- Ashburn Road – road and bikes lane closed south of Winchester Road and north of Spencers Road to support construction
Residents should expect possible delays during peak traffic times. Please follow posted detour signage and take alternate routes if possible.
We apologize for any inconvenience and thank residents for their patience as we work to improve our infrastructure.
