Whitby Ends Use of Social Media Platform X

The Town of Whitby has officially discontinued the use of the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) due to growing concerns about the platform’s accountability, direction, and viability as a trusted space for public communication.

X is increasingly being used to spread harmful misinformation and at times discriminatory beliefs. The nature of this content does not align with the Town’s core values of collaboration, accountability, respect, and engagement.

Despite this change, the Town remains committed to keeping residents informed through clear, factual, and responsible communication. Residents can continue to receive updates through the following channels:

  • Town’s Online Newsroom - Subscribe to “All News”
  • Facebook and LinkedIn - Follow the Town’s corporate social media channels
  • Facebook - Follow the Whitby Fire & Emergency Services page
  • Instagram – Follow the Town’s Explore Whitby account

The Town will continue to explore and test new ways to engage with residents and is committed to keeping them informed and connected.

Quotes

With growing risks to Canadian sovereignty and tensions due to actions being taken south of our border, it’s more important than ever that we create and uphold a culture of respect and inclusivity – both in our community and on the channels we use to engage with our residents. Under Elon Musk's control, the social media platform X is increasingly being used to spread harmful misinformation, permitting and perpetuating a culture of division and distrust. To ensure a safe and more respectful place for public discourse, we have made the decision to discontinue our use of this platform.

- Matt Gaskell, Chief Administrative Officer, Town of Whitby

Whitby is committed to respectful, inclusive, and fact-based dialogue. Given this platform’s decline in reliability and safety, I support CAO Gaskell’s decision to discontinue its use by the Town of Whitby, and I will also be removing my Mayor Elizabeth Roy account. Many reputable organizations have already done the same, and I believe it’s the right step to ensure we continue engaging with our residents in a way that is positive and meaningful.

Elizabeth Roy, Mayor, Town of Whitby
