What You Need to Know This Spring

As the weather warms up, it’s the perfect time to get outside and enjoy everything Whitby has to offer. From scenic trails to bike rides, here are a few reminders to keep our community safe and beautiful.

Ride, Explore and Stay Safe

Get outside and explore Whitby with micromobility options like e-bikes and e-scooters. The Town’s new by-law sets clear rules for where and how these devices can be used, making it easier for everyone to travel safely while enjoying the outdoors.

Things to do safely this spring:

·       Explore trails and bike lanes while enjoying the warmer weather.

·       Follow the by-law - Wear a helmet, observe age limits, and obey traffic rules.

·       Share the space - Slow down around pedestrians and stay off sidewalks.

·       Report unsafe riding or violations to keep streets and trails safe for everyone.

By following the by-law and riding responsibly, you can enjoy a fun, safe, and eco-friendly way to get around Whitby this spring.

Reserve a Gazebo Starting March 23

It’s not too early to start planning a summer picnic or birthday party at a Whitby park. The Town has three gazebos available for rent: Grass Park (41 Baldwin St.), Rotary Centennial Park (800 Brock St.), and Rotary Sunrise Lake Park (269 Water St.). Barbecues are only allowed in designated shelters and require a permit. You can reserve picnic shelters and gazebos from May 9 to October 4, 2026. Permit requests open on Monday, March 23, 2026. To book one of these gazebos, please complete a Picnic Shelter, Gazebo, General Park Permit Rental Request Form or call 905.668.7765.

Plan a Spring Cleanup

Residents, businesses and community groups are encouraged to take part in Whitby's Anti-Litter Cleanup Program. Schedule a one-time clean-up or adopt a park, trail or roadway for a minimum of two years. It’s a simple way to protect the environment and show community pride.

Keep the Town Beautiful

When spending time outdoors, please remember to:

  • Put waste in its place and use available garbage and recycling bins.
  • Secure garbage and stack blue boxes on windy days to prevent litter.
  • Clean up after your pet and dispose of pet waste properly.

Spring Yard Waste and Storm Drain Tips

Did you know Yard Waste collection begins April 6 this year? Spring is the perfect time to freshen up your yard. Put leaves, branches, and garden waste in approved Kraft paper bags or clearly labelled reusable containers and place out for collection on your scheduled yard waste day. You can also help prevent flooding by clearing leaves and debris from storm catch basins near your property. Keep waste off the road and make your neighbourhood safer and cleaner. Create a Backyard Oasis with Native Shrubs from LEAF

Did you know you can add beauty and privacy to your yard, while supporting local wildlife and enjoying edible fruit? Through our partnership with Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests (LEAF) you can choose from a wide selection of native shrubs that support both people and nature. All shrubs come with mulch and care resources, and you can choose full-service planting or convenient door-to-door delivery. LEAF also offers themed bundles, letting you get four shrubs for the price of three. Themes include Butterfly, Edible, Native Bee, Privacy, Shade, Small Yard and Songbird. Apply today.

Spring Fire Safety Reminders

Spring is a great time to check your smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms. Working alarms help keep your home and family safe. New CO alarm rules that took effect earlier this year say that any home with fuel‑burning appliances, a fireplace, or an attached garage must have CO alarms on every storey, even floors without bedrooms. CO alarms also need to be installed near all sleeping areas.

Have a great spring, Whitby.
