Shape The Future Of Trees In Whitby
As Whitby grows, its trees face challenges from climate change, invasive species, and more. That’s why the Town is working on an Urban Forest Management Plan (UFMP) to help maintain, protect, and enhance tree cover over the next 20 years.
As part of phase one, more than 300 community members shared their thoughts and ideas to inform the UFMP. Thanks to that feedback, the plan is now in phase two.
Have Your Say
- Review the plan and complete an online survey on the Connect Whitby page by Friday, January 30.
- Attend an in-person community engagement session on January 21 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Town Hall (575 Rossland Road East) or email urbanforest@whitby.ca for the Zoom link to attend virtually.
Here’s What We Heard in Phase One
· Over 90% of respondents support growing Whitby’s urban forest.
· 60% said the Town needs a lot more tree cover.
· The top challenges respondents think Whitby’s urban forest is facing are trees being injured or removed during construction projects, insufficient tree planting or post-planting care, urban forest pests, diseases, and invasive species.
Next Steps
Feedback will be used to develop a final Urban Forest Management Plan to be brought forward for Council approval in 2026.
