Rumour or Reality? The Need for the Fieldgate Sports Complex

You may have heard the claim:

“The Fieldgate Sports Complex is unnecessary - the Abilities Centre already exists.”

Here are the facts.

The Town of Whitby is building the Fieldgate Sports Complex to meet both current and future recreation needs of a growing community. Located on the west side of Baldwin Street South, south of Highway 407, the complex is designed as a multi-purpose gathering space for residents of all ages and abilities.

The 160,000 sq. ft. facility will include:

  • A twin-pad arena
  • A 25-metre, 10-lane competition pool - the largest in Durham Region
  • A double gymnasium with walking track
  • Flexible community and cultural spaces

The surrounding 13-acre park space will feature pickleball and basketball courts, a pump track and skateboard park, a sports field, and additional amenities.

The complex will meet LEED Gold and Zero Carbon standards.

Why a new complex is needed:

The need was identified through the Town’s Culture, Parks, Recreation and Open Space Strategic Master Plan and Sports Facility Strategy, both informed by extensive community engagement and consultation with local sports organizations.

What about the Abilities Centre?

The Abilities Centre is a valued, world-class facility, but it is not owned or operated by the Town and was not designed to accommodate amenities such as twin ice pads, competition pools, or large outdoor sports fields. The new complex is intended to complement existing facilities, not replace them.
