Green Quarterly - January 2026 Updates

Hello, Whitby. Each quarter, Whitby’s Sustainability Team is committed to bringing you the latest innovations, initiatives, and eco-friendly tips. From cutting-edge projects to community-driven action, discover how we're making our town greener - together.

Here's what's new:

Whitby was recognized with two Durham Greener Buildings awards in November 2025 for its continued progress toward climate and energy goals. Whitby’s Centennial Building received the Best Emissions and Energy Performance Award for Performing Arts for achieving the lowest greenhouse gas intensity in its category. The Fieldgate Sports Complex also received a Leadership and Sustainability Impact Award for its outstanding sustainability performance.

The Whitby Green Standard continues to support more sustainable new development across the Town and was approved by Council on December 15. This new version will be an incentive-based program designed to recognize builders who achieve higher performance levels. The Incentive Program will be comprised of staff assistance, builder recognition, and a one-year pilot financial incentive, supported by funding the Town received through the Housing Accelerator Fund. Two new Indigenous artwork panels were installed on the Sea Cadet building by the new Whitby Visitor’s Centre located at Shirley Scott Park at the Whitby waterfront. Through sponsorship from Elexicon Energy, artist Tessa Shank created “Spirit of the Lake” that provides a narrative of the life and spirit of Lake Ontario with the turtle and loon family.

The Whitby Waste Buddy App makes waste management easy. Download the app, enter your address, and access your collection schedule for green bins and blue boxes. You can also search items to learn how and where to properly dispose of them—helping keep Whitby clean and green in 2026.

One of the easiest ways to reduce your environmental impact is by changing laundry habits. Wash with cold water, air-dry when possible, and avoid washing clothes after every wear to save energy. Choose eco-friendly detergents or low packaging options like laundry strips to reduce chemicals and waste. For an even bigger impact, consider upgrading to Energy Star appliances and take advantage of rebates through the Home Renovation Savings program.

Ongoing Support & Resources:

Looking to make your home more energy-efficient? The Home Renovation SavingsTM program offered by Enbridge Gas and Save on EnergyTM, provides rebates for upgrades like heat pumps, solar panels, insulation, smart thermostats and more. Flexible options are available for Whitby homeowners and can help you find the right upgrades for your home today.

Thinking about upgrading your thermostat? Through the Home Renovations SavingsTM program, you can receive a $100 rebate on a smart thermostat. These devices help you save energy and lower your bills by automatically adjusting heating and cooling based on your habits and the season. Learn more.
