4Sight Utility Engineers: Seeing Beneath the Surface to Build a Stronger Future
In infrastructure development, what you can’t see can often be the most critical. Hidden utilities have the power to delay projects, create safety hazards, and increase costs. That’s where 4Sight Utility Engineers, a Whitby-based firm specializing in Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) and Utility Coordination (UC), makes its mark. Founded in 2020 by husband-and-wife team Lawrence and Denise, the company has quickly become a trusted partner for developers, municipalities, and engineering firms across Ontario.
With more than two decades of leadership advancing SUE practices across Canada, Lawrence, a Professional Engineer, founded his company on the principles of clarity, accuracy, and excellence. “Anyone who puts a shovel in the ground can be our client,” he explains. The firm uses advanced geophysical equipment, including a multi-channel ground-penetrating radar system, known internally as “Betsy”, to locate utilities such as water, gas, telecom, and hydro lines before excavation begins. Betsy is one of only two of the Impulse Radar Multi-Channel GPR systems in Canada. The result is detailed CAD-based mapping and expert guidance that help clients manage risk, avoid costly conflicts, and build safely and efficiently.
“Our strength lies in turning complex utility information into clear, actionable drawings,” says Lawrence. “We help clients see what’s below the surface before they start designs or break ground, saving time, money, and potential headaches.” From major transit initiatives like the Ontario Line Subway and Durham Bus Rapid Transit Line lines to local subdivision and road expansion projects, 4Sight’s work supports both large-scale infrastructure and community-level growth.
But technical excellence is only part of the story. 4Sight is built on a people-first philosophy, guided by three principles: associates, clients, and Innovative, entrepreneurial spirit. With Denise leading people and culture, the organization emphasizes mentorship, continuous improvement, and creating opportunities for professional success. The firm is proud to have two female professional engineers on its executive team — a commitment reflected in its efforts to support women in STEM.
That commitment extends into the community. The founders, longtime Brooklin residents, have established a $1,000 annual scholarship for a female engineering student at Brooklin High School and provide post-secondary scholarships for employees’ children. The company also sponsors youth sports, supports local events, and partners with Whitby-based businesses, including Crave Doughnuts and Little Beasts Brewing, for company milestones, like their recent 5-year anniversary. Lawrence additionally volunteers on the Durham Region United Way board and supports a memorial scholarship at Toronto Metropolitan University, underscoring 4Sight’s dedication to giving back.
Strategically located in Whitby for its talented workforce and proximity to the 401, 412, and 407, 4Sight remains deeply connected to the community it serves. Their goal is not just growth, but leadership. 4Sight focuses on setting the standard for SUE in Canada through integrity, innovation, and a commitment to doing what’s right for clients and the communities they build in.
As Ontario enters a pivotal period of infrastructure investment, 4Sight is poised to help shape the future, one safe, informed, and well-planned project at a time. For those preparing to break ground, 4Sight offers technical expertise and delivers clarity, confidence, and peace of mind.
