Presented below are answers to a number of frequently asked questions (FAQs) about employment opportunities with the Town of Whitby.

Where are jobs with the Town of Whitby advertised?

As positions become available, they are posted on the Employment Opportunities page. Various newspapers and external websites may also be used to supplement the recruitment process, e.g., Durham Region Employment Network, local paper, associations, etc.

How often are Town of Whitby jobs posted?

Positions available to the public are posted on the Employment Opportunities page as they become available. Therefore, it is important to visit the website regularly to check for job opportunities.

How do I apply for jobs with the Town of Whitby?

The Town of Whitby does not use application forms for most of the advertised positions; however, candidates can submit a resume and cover letter. There are a few positions for which an application form is required in addition to resume and cover letter. Examples are Instructor/Guard, Pool Coordinator, Firefighter, and Summer positions. If an application form is required, a link will be provided in the posting. In addition, application forms are available in Human Resource Services in the Whitby Municipal Building.

Can I send in my resume/application at any time?

Resumes/ applications can be submitted at any time and will be maintained on file for a period of three (3) months. However, if you see a posting for a specific position that you are interested in, it is recommended that you apply for that specific position. Personal information is collected under the authority of the Municipal Act.

If I see a job I want to apply for, how do I submit my resume/application?

To ensure that your resume/application is considered for the position to which you have applied, please reference the Posting Reference Number shown on the job advertisement.

A separate resume/application must be submitted for each position that you apply for.

Only resumes/applications addressed to and received in Human Resource Services will be considered for the vacancy.

Are there cut off dates for sending resumes/applications?

Advertised positions may indicate an application deadline date, which is the final day for submitting your resume/application for the specified position. Unless otherwise stated, applications will be accepted until midnight on the application deadline date. Late applications will only be considered in the event a candidate is not selected from those applications received prior to the deadline. Resumes not received in Human Resource Services by the deadline cannot be considered.

Will I be contacted when my resume is received?

Only those candidates who are selected for an interview will be contacted. While we thank all applicants for their interest, due to the volume of applications/resumes received, we are unable to contact everyone who applies. Due to the volume of applications received for posted positions, we are unable to respond to telephone and email inquiries regarding an applicant's status in the process.

Are you recruiting Firefighters at this time?

When we are actively recruiting for the Firefighter position, the position will be posted on the Employment Opportunities page.

Do you hire Summer Students?

We currently offer summer student employment in two different summer programs:

  1. The "Summer Student Employment Program" is open to all students who have reached the age of sixteen (16) years and are currently enrolled in, and attending a post-secondary educational institution during the current school year and returning for the upcoming school year.
  2. The "Summer Camp Program" is open to all students who have reached the age of sixteen (16) years.
