Councillor Deidre Newman was elected Councillor for West Ward (2) in 2018 and is serving her first term on Council.
Councillor Newman earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto, a Bachelor of Law degree from Queen's University, a Certificat de Langue Française Degré Supérieur from the Sorbonne in Paris and a Certificat d'Assiduité in International Law at the Hague.
As a young lawyer, Deidre worked for the Government of Ontario, Ministry of Natural Resources and served as a policy advisor on the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. She also instructed Law Students on basic legal skills at the University of Toronto's Student Legal Aid Clinic.
As an experienced lawyer, Councillor Newman has had her own law practice in Whitby for more than twenty years and has served vulnerable people, focusing on family law in all its facets with the intersecting aspects of criminal law. As a result, she has dealt with society at every economic and social level and has interacted with every level of government.
Councillor Newman was inspired by her father at a young age, seeing him serve as the Mayor of the Town of Whitby and President of the Canadian Federation of Mayors and Municipalities.
Deidre was born in Whitby. Having a close bond with her family, Deidre looks forward to continuing her father's legacy and serving the people of our community with integrity, vision and hard work.

Deidre is a certified YMCA Volunteer Fitness Instructor and has served as Chair of the YMCA Leadership Council, as Governor of the Board of Governors and has received the YMCA Volunteer of the Year Award for the GTA. An avid runner, she has completed the Boston Marathon and organized a team of Canadian women runners who set a Guinness World Record in support of the YMCA Charitable Fund.
