The Town of Whitby is part of the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities. As an age-friendly community, we are committed to providing supportive physical and social environments for older people.
Through 55+ recreation spaces, services and programs and resources, we enable you to live an active, safe and meaningful life, while contributing in all areas of the community.
In June 2021, 55+ Recreation staff along with Town and Regional staff, conducted an Age-Friendly Whitby Roundtable discussing 55+ Programs, the Whitby Age-Friendly Plan, Accessibility and the Durham Council on Aging initiatives. MPP Lorne Coe hosted the discussion and Minister for Seniors and Accessibility, Raymond Cho, brought greetings. The hour long webinar was recorded and can be accessed for viewing here.
As part of the Age-Friendly Whitby Action Plan, the Recreation Phone In program allows adults age 55+ to participate in activities and connect with others in the community. For more information or to register, contact us at 905-668-1424 or email us.
Funded by a grant from the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility, the hour-long program is delivered over the phone and includes engaging activities, such as trivia, travel logs, music and storytelling. The program is for Town residents aged 55+ only.
The Age-Friendly Action Plan identifies 72 recommendations for making the Town an even better place for older adults to live, work and play. It was developed in consultation with community members, organizations, Regional and Town staff.
