Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You!
As Fire Prevention Week approaches, Whitby Fire and Emergency Services (WFES) is calling on residents to prioritize working smoke alarms to keep their homes and loved ones safe. This year's theme, "Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You!" underscores the critical role smoke alarms play in fire safety.
Scheduled from October 6-12, 2024, Fire Prevention Week serves as an important reminder of the life-saving impact of properly installed and maintained smoke alarms. Research shows that working smoke alarms can reduce the risk of fire-related deaths by over 50 per cent. However, nearly 60 per cent of fire fatalities happen in homes without working smoke alarms or where alarms are not working correctly.
WFES is increasingly concerned about the number of smoke alarms in our community that are either expired, have had their batteries removed, or have been completely taken down and put in a drawer. To enhance safety and preparedness, WFES urges all residents to check that their smoke alarms are properly installed, tested monthly, and replaced as per the manufacturer's instructions. Taking these simple steps can significantly improve your family's protection in the event of a fire.
Key Smoke Alarm Safety Tips from WFES:
During a house fire, working smoke alarms can mean the difference between life and death, providing the critical seconds needed to escape safely. This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, 'Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You!' highlights the crucial role of properly installed and maintained smoke alarms. Data shows that working smoke alarms can significantly reduce the risk of fire-related deaths. Yet, many homes in Whitby still lack working smoke alarms. I urge all residents to take a few moments to check their smoke alarms and ensure they are working properly, and to prioritize fire safety throughout the year.
