Designation Recognizes Town’s Commitment to Protect Pollinators and Their Habitat

Bee City Canada has designated the Town of Whitby as a “Bee City” — the tenth municipality in Canada and first in Durham Region to receive the designation.

The Bee City designation is awarded to municipalities that make a declaration to protect pollinators and their habitat through action and education. This past Monday, January 29, the Town receive its official Bee City Canada Declaration Certificate.

“We are pleased to be named Canada’s next Bee City,” said Whitby Mayor Don Mitchell. “By becoming a Bee City, we join other Canadian communities and Bee City Canada in the commitment to support our bee populations and other pollinators.”

Building on the Town’s current activities aimed at conserving and restoring pollinator habitats, new initiatives being explored for 2018 include the planting of a new pollinator garden on Whitby’s waterfront and public education workshops and initiatives around the importance of pollinators.
