A Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC) Heritage Whitby was established by By-law in April of 1978 to assist Council in the conservation and preservation of heritage buildings, properties and resources in the Town. This includes the evaluation of candidate properties for heritage designation and informing the community about heritage conservation matters in Whitby.
LACAC Heritage Whitby, in addition to seeing the successful designation of over 55 properties under Part 4 of the Ontario Heritage Act, is also responsible for organizing the Doors Open Whitby tour, and hosts displays at the Brooklin Spring Fair, County Town Carnival, Harbour Days, Harvest Festival, and Heritage Day.
The Committee shall consist of eleven (11) members one of which shall be the Mayor or the Mayor’s designate.
The Committee meets once per month at the Whitby Municipal Building, 575 Rossland Road East, in Committee Room #1 from 7pm – 9pm. The public is welcome to attend.
The Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC) Heritage Whitby, with cooperation from the Corporation of the Town of Whitby, has created the "Heritage Information Pack" for Whitby homeowners interested in designating their home.
The Heritage Information Pack includes booklets and pamphlets which can assist Whitby residents in achieving "Historical and Architectural Significance". The materials in the package outline Whitby's history and the reasons for conserving its heritage landmarks. It also provides an explanation of the Ontario Heritage Act, and the extent to which it provides for conservation, and introduces LACAC and its activities.
Should you wish to pursue designation or have any enquiries, please obtain your free Heritage Information Package at the Planning Department within the Whitby Municipal Building, 575 Rossland Road East, Whitby, Ontario.
A Heritage Permit is required to undertake changes to properties designated under the Ontario Heritage Act. Properties are either designated individually under Part IV of the Act or are designated within a Heritage Conservation District under Part V of the Act.
There is no fee for a Heritage Permit Application and all applications must be reviewed by LACAC Heritage Whitby prior to making any decisions.
LACAC Heritage Whitby produces a quarterly newsletter that discusses information about significant historical events, buildings, anniversaries or activities the Committee thinks is important to the heritage of Whitby.
