Whitby In Bloom is one of the Town's civic beautification programs promoting civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community participation and the challenge of a friendly competition. Whitby In Bloom has put down roots in the community for five years. It is a home-grown program based on the international Communities In Bloom program. Whitby In Bloom promotes civic pride and is a program made strong by the efforts of community volunteers. Dedicated volunteers invest many hours during the fall, winter and spring ensuring the Whitby In Bloom program is successful and available to all.

How Can You Get Involved?

• You can:
• volunteer
• increase your community involvement
• become a community sponsor
• Help beautify Whitby by:
• tidying up your property
• clean up the boulevard between your house and the street
• help pick up litter at a park
• use your green bin
• cut your lawn and practice grass recycling
• properly dispose of waste create a natural garden using biodegradable, environmentally friendly pest control, rain water and natural fertilizers

Front Garden Challenge

Registration is required to participate in the Front Garden Challenge. The registration deadline for 2010 is Friday, July 2. Volunteer judges view the portion of registered gardens that can be seen from the road as part of the Front Garden Challenge. The Whitby In Bloom committee recruits local volunteers.

All registrants receive a garden sign denoting participation in the program.

Judges takes place annually over a 7-14 day period. This year, judging will occur from July 10 - 18.

5 Bloom Award Judging Guidelines

• The 5 Bloom garden possesses all these qualities:
• shows originality in design and execution and outstanding maintenance
• is neat, tidy and well maintained
• illustrates good selection, diversity and arrangement of plant material
• uses colour, harmony and balance
• employs focal point or features in design
• shows originality in materials and arrangement
• has obvious curb appeal

• May 27, 2010 - Shrubs for All Seasons, 7:00 p.m. - Whitby Central Library
• Jun 10, 2010 - The Trees I Love; The Best Trees for Your Garden, 7:00 p.m. - Brooklin Community Centre
