Ashburn Community Centre

A Council-appointed committee of residents, who serve on the Board for two-year terms, operates Ashburn Community Centre. The Board oversees its local community programming. Built by William Pearson in 1861, each wall of the Centennial Community Centre is constructed in a different style using stones of various sizes. After operating as Ashburn School for 105 years, the building was closed in 1966 and sold to the Township of Whitby for two dollars. In 1967, the school was transformed into the present-day community centre, and a kitchen was added to the west side. The Town of Whitby Parks and Recreation Department currently operates the centre, which was designated a historic building in 1983.

Centennial Building
The Centennial Building is one of the Town's premier rental facilities for special occasions, conferences and meetings. The Centennial Building began in the early 1850s as the Ontario County Courthouse, and served from 1854 to 1964 as a trial court and a meeting place for County Council. In 1967, a local Centennial project turned the building into a community centre. The courthouse is currently the Whitby Courthouse Theatre. The building includes a banquet facility, local archives, and is used by community organizations. In 1979, the Centennial Building was designated a heritage building. The building underwent extensive renovations in 2002 and 2003, and reopened to the public on June 14, 2003.
