Those interested in running for office in the next Whitby municipal election – being held Monday, October 22, 2018 – will soon be able to file their intent to run with the opening of nominations on May 1. Ward Map

For this year’s Municipal Election, voters will elect nine Council Members to Whitby Town Council: the Mayor and four Regional Councillors elected by all voters in the Town, and four local Councillors elected by voters from each of the four wards (as shown on the map). Voters may also cast a vote for school board trustees and Regional Chair. A detailed chart on the offices to be elected can be found here.

The deadline for a candidate to file a nomination is July 27, 2018, at 2 p.m. New legislative changes now require candidate nominations for Whitby Council to be endorsed by a minimum of 25 persons eligible to vote in an election for an office within the Town. More detailed information on the requirements to submit a nomination can be found here.

In addition to the opening of nominations, May 1 also marks the first day that an individual, corporation or trade union can register as a third party advertiser. The deadline for third party advertisers to file notice of registration is October 19, 2018 at 4:30 p.m. The campaign period begins once a candidate files their nomination or a third party advertiser files their notice of registration and the notice is certified by the Town Clerk.

To learn more, all prospective candidates or third party advertisers are welcome to attend an Election Information Session being held by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs on Tuesday, April 24, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Whitby Centennial Building.
