At its special budget meeting, Whitby Council approved the 2013 Operating Budget of $103 million and Capital Budget of $24 million, resulting in a 2.98 percent property tax increase on the Town’s portion of the tax bill. This translates into an increase of $40 on an average home assessed at $319,000.
“Budget 2013 assures that Whitby continues to focus on its vision to be the ‘Community of Choice’ by meeting community needs, providing competitive taxes and living within our means,” says Councillor Elizabeth Roy, Budget Chair.
Council is aware of the challenging economic conditions, and the Town continues to take a responsible approach to budgeting. The Town of Whitby has no external debt. The 2013 budget results in a 2.17 percent tax increase on the total residential property taxes when all three levels of government are taken into account (Town, Region of Durham, and Provincial School Boards).
“This budget will allow the Town of Whitby to continue to maintain core services, take care of our assets, provide for the cost of growth, as well as address provincially mandated requirements such as accessibility,” says Mayor Pat Perkins.
Council is dedicated to ensuring accessible, efficient and affordable services that enhance the quality of life of Whitby’s growing and diverse community. The delivery of core services to the community requires considerable infrastructure, assets and equipment.
In 2013, municipal taxes will maintain and deliver core services, including: Roads, Bridges and Sidewalks; Fire and Emergency Services; Facilities, Parks and Trails; Public Library services; Waste Management; Community Programs, including Recreation/Fitness, Youth and Seniors; Economic Development; Winter Control; Corporate Governance and Administration; Building, Planning and Development Services; By-Law and Animal Services; Downtown Development and Heritage; Special Events and Grants; and the Station Gallery.
